Keystone State adopts environmental schoolbook, includes IPM unit

Pennsylvania has accepted an environmental textbook for use in its public schools.

The state is the nation's first to require environmental studies, including integrated pest management, as part of its core curriculum.  Inclusion of IPM studies in the textbook was mandated by a law that also requires advance notification of pesticide applications on school
grounds. The regulations developed to implement the law set minimum standards for student knowledge about the environment, starting with the fourth grade.

The new textbook, which is intended for 9th and 10th grade students, was published by the Globe Pearson Learning Group.
