Laboratory Technician in Urban Entomology

Position Description and Responsibilities: The newly established DeVries Lab at the University of Kentucky is hiring a Laboratory Technician (full-time) to assist in urban entomology research and extension efforts. Defined broadly, urban entomology encompasses a multitude of topics relating to pests found indoors and around structures. The primary responsibilities of this position include: initially assisting in setting up a new laboratory, ordering supplies, rearing insects (primarily cockroaches and bed bugs), conducting experiments independently and as part of a team, working in homes with pest infestations, delivering education materials to the public (homeowners, pest control operators, chemical companies), helping students, and overseeing day-to-day lab operation.

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field is required. Experience working with insects (collecting, rearing, conducting experiments), conducting research, and interacting with the public (especially speaking Spanish) are a plus. The successful applicant will have a passion for improving urban pest management and mitigating health risks associated with urban pests.

Start Date and Compensation: The successful applicant will start In January 2020 (or soon thereafter, if mutually agreed upon). Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
