The New York State IPM program at Cornell University has produced a new IPM fact sheet on nuisance geese, an increasing problem for schools and other facilities throughout much of the United States and southern Canada. Issues with geese include messy accumulations of feces, degraded water quality, the potential for disease transmission, traction issues on athletic fields and playing surfaces, turf damage, traffic hazards, noise, and aggression during the nesting season. Geese impact schools by not only aesthetically degrading the grounds, but also in terms of community relations and costs associated with management. Author, Community IPM Extension Area Educator and School IPM 2020 project steering committee member Lynn Braband examines the various IPM control options available and weighs advantages and disadvantages.
